In this course, students will learn how language, language use, skills, and assessment in real-world contexts are related to English language education and language learners. Language can be described in terms of its vocabulary, grammar, and texts at discourse and pragmatic levels and analyzed using technology (e.g., corpus linguistics). Language skills (listening, speaking, pronunciation, reading, and writing) and how they are assessed will be explored in light of the current applied linguistics literature. The processes of how learners with varying learning styles, strategies, and degrees of motivation acquire and are socialized into language(s), especially English, will also be discussed. To achieve learning outcomes of this course, students will (A) practice sharing their thoughts or reflections on classroom readings; (B) write an essay on their history of language learning, teaching, and use; (C) review the literature on a topic relevant to applied linguistics; and (D) write an evaluation of an English language teaching program in a real-world context in view of the literature.
